The city of Chicago triumphed in the bid to hold the landmark event, which would go down in history as having a profound influence on the American cultural landscape, attracting over 27 million visitors in all. The World’s Columbian Exposition, more widely known in later history as the Chicago World’s Fair, also bequeathed a legacy to numismatics in the form of the U.S. Mint’s first true commemorative coin. Chicago won the bid to hold the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1892 and staged the event in 1893. Both years are represented on the coins that were minted as a U.S. Treasury grant to help build the fairgrounds; the Fair Authority had requested the grant of 2.5 million coins by issuing in half-dollars in order that they could sell the souvenirs at a mark-up to full dollar, helping to cover a shortfall in funding. Only a few hundred thousand coins wound up selling at this price, and the rest were released to circulate at face value or simply melted down, surviving down the decades to become some of the most abundantly available 19th-century coins on the collectors’ market.

The coin’s obverse field features Christopher Columbus in effigy, surrounded at the rim by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “COLUMBIAN HALF DOLLAR.”

The reverse field shows his ship Santa Maria sailing westward above a pair of planispheres that divide the date “1492.” This is accompanied by the lettering “WORLD’S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION,” “CHICAGO,” and the date of issue.
