The Gold $5 Liberty Half Eagle was introduced by the United States Mint in 1838. Designed by the 3rd Chief Engraver of the Mint, Christian Gobrecht, the design replaced the short-lived Classic Head design of Liberty that had been created just four years earlier. That design had been developed in 1834 by Gobrecht’s predecessor, 2nd Chief Engraver William Kneass.
All of these 1908 Pre-33 Gold $5 Liberty Half Eagles are available to purchase in XF+ condition. A coin in Extremely Fine condition boasts only light wear or friction on the highest points of the coin with trace mint luster still visible. The coins will ship in protective plastic flips.
Please take a moment to note that we only guarantee the date mark, denomination, and design of the coin. The exact condition of the coin you receive will be determined by in-stock items when your payment clears. The coin or coins you receive may be in exact XF condition or slightly better, hence the XF+ designation. Lady Liberty graces the obverse side of 1908 Pre-33 Gold $5 Liberty Half Eagles. This design was created in 1838 and features Liberty with her hair in a bun, a coronet on her head, and strands of curls running down the side of her head and neck. A ring of 13 stars encircles her and the date mark is featured below.
The heraldic eagle is found on the reverse of 1908 Pre-33 Gold Liberty Half Eagles. This is the second version of the seal as it includes a banner with “In God We Trust” inscribed on it. This was added to various US denominations in 1866 following the Civil War.
