After twenty-five years of striking the so-called Buffalo nickel — which, true to its name, featured an image of the majestic animal that once teemed on the American plains — the U.S. Mint began searching for a new coin design that would be easier to produce while matching the prior nickel’s distinctively American character. A contest for the contract led to a win for the German-born sculptor Felix Schlag, whose design featured the third American President and his legendary home of Monticello. This became the enduring modern version of the American nickel, and some years of its production include supplies of uncirculated coins with value for collectors. That includes the 1962 Gem Proof Jefferson Nickel now on offer from Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives in flips or tubes of 40 coins!
  • Issued in 1962!
  • Survival estimate of 120,000 coins!
  • The coin’s metal content is 75% copper and 25% nickel.
  • Face value of five cents issued by the United States of America.
  • The obverse side features a profile image of Thomas Jefferson.
  • The reverse side features the famous Monticello manor.

The 1962 Gem Proof Jefferson Nickel is a modern nickel with strong visual appeal. Its proof-quality finish provides for brilliant backgrounds, and it ships in flips or tubes of 40 coins.

Before the advent of the modern nickel, the U.S. Mint issued a coin featuring the artwork of a Native American and a buffalo known as the Buffalo nickel. Difficulties in the minting process, however, eventually prompted the change to an image of Thomas Jefferson and a complementary engraving of the famous mansion known as Monticello, renowned as an architectural marvel.

The obverse side of this coin features Jefferson’s effigy in profile, accompanied by the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “LIBERTY – 1962.” Its reverse side features an engraving of Monticello along with several inscriptions: “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “MONTICELLO” and “FIVE CENTS.”

Are your products actually in stock?

Yes. We are one of the few bullion dealers in the industry who only deems products "in stock" when we have them on-hand and ready to ship immediately. In the instance of a presale item, we denote that the product is on presale and the estimated shipping date. While we make the best efforts to hit presale dates, the dates are only estimates, given we cannot control mint production issues and/or carrier dealyes.

Why are multiple prices listed?

We offer a 4% discount to "cash" paying customers - with paper check, bank wire, and bitcoin payments being defined as cash. On many products, we are also able to offer volume discounts to customers purchasing large quantities of the same item. All volume pricing is laid out in the chart on the product's description page, as well as in the cart.

When do I lock in my price?

All prices are locked in at the time of purchase. Credit/debit card, PayPal, BitCoin, Ethereum, and Ripple orders are paid at the time of checkout, while paper check and bank wire orders require a credit/debit card on file to lock in your pricing while we await your payment. Please note, paper check and bank wire orders will NOT result in a charge to your card - we simple maintain the card on file while we await full payment by your selected payment method.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently only ship to addresses in the United States, including APOs.
