The US Mint began selling Proof Sets in 1936. Coin collectors loved purchasing them for their collections. This love grew so much so that in 1957, the Mint sold over 1 million sets that year alone for the first time! Annual sales of Proof Sets continued to increase, making the 3,218,019 sets sold in 1962 the largest number of Proof Sets sold in one year to date. This desire for these Proof Sets led to the US Mint limiting sales to no more than 10 sets per order, hoping to restrict collectors from buying for speculation purposes. These 1962 coins were also some of the last ones to be struck in 90% silver. They are proof strikes, making them more visually beautiful. Currently, 1962 US Mint Proof Sets are available for purchase from Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Received in sealed plastic pouch with US Mint manila envelope!
  • Five 1962 coins from the US Mint are included!
  • Set consists of .6148 Troy ounce of actual silver content.
  • Proof specimens.
  • Each coin has its respective face value in US dollars.
  • Each denomination has its own obverse and reverse design.
  • Issued total of 3,218,019 proof sets in 1962.
  • Please remember that some sets may lack the outer envelope or other shipping pieces, but the coins are in good condition and remain in the sealed pouches.

German-born American sculptor Felix Schlag designed both the obverse and the reverse of the Jefferson Nickel. His design for the coin was selected by the Director of the US Mint, Nellie Tayloe Ross, in 1938.

The Jefferson Nickel obverse features a bust of President Thomas Jefferson, facing left, with a colonial-era pigtail. The bust is so large that it takes up the majority of the obverse, leaving minimal room for the various inscriptions.

The Jefferson Nickel reverse features the full front view of the Monticello mansion, near Charlottesville, Virginia. The Monticello was Jefferson’s mansion, that he designed himself.

The Proof Set includes one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and the Franklin Half Dollar. The coins were some of the last to contain 90% fine silver. The Proof Sets were reduced to 40% fine silver (silver clad) beginning in 1965.

The set is sealed in a plastic pouch that contains the 5 coins plus an octagonal foil seal imprinted with US MINT PHILADELPHIA. The pouch is then inserted into a Treasury Department US Mint manila envelope.

Where does your spot price come from?

We use a live, up-to-the-second spot price feed supplied by Xignite.com, a worldwide leader in the data supply market.

Are your products actually in stock?

Yes. We are one of the few bullion dealers in the industry who only deems products "in stock" when we have them on-hand and ready to ship immediately. In the instance of a presale item, we denote that the product is on presale and the estimated shipping date. While we make the best efforts to hit presale dates, the dates are only estimates, given we cannot control mint production issues and/or carrier dealyes.

Why are multiple prices listed?

We offer a 4% discount to "cash" paying customers - with paper check, bank wire, and bitcoin payments being defined as cash. On many products, we are also able to offer volume discounts to customers purchasing large quantities of the same item. All volume pricing is laid out in the chart on the product's description page, as well as in the cart.

When do I lock in my price?

All prices are locked in at the time of purchase. Credit/debit card, PayPal, BitCoin, Ethereum, and Ripple orders are paid at the time of checkout, while paper check and bank wire orders require a credit/debit card on file to lock in your pricing while we await your payment. Please note, paper check and bank wire orders will NOT result in a charge to your card - we simple maintain the card on file while we await full payment by your selected payment method.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently only ship to addresses in the United States, including APOs.
