In 1862, the United States introduced its first widely circulated form of paper currency. The United States Note debuted just months after the first-ever paper note from the US, the Demand Note. While the latter was specifically aimed at raising funds for the Union during the Civil War, the United States Note was a broader series that remained in circulation until 1971. Today, 1963 $5 Legal Tender Notes are available to you online at Silver.com.

Note Highlights:

  • Available to ship to you inside individual plastic currency sleeves!
  • Final refresh for the $5 Legal Tender Note!
  • Comes in GEM Uncirculated condition!
  • The face value of $5 (USD) is fully backed by the US government.
  • On the obverse is President Abraham Lincoln.
  • The reverse features the Lincoln Memorial.

In total, there were six design iterations used on the $5 United States Note. The first image was released in 1862 with the debut of the series, and four of the six redesigns occurred in the 19th century. Following the 1862 release with an image of the allegory of Freedom and a bust of Alexander Hamilton, the note was modified in 1869, 1875, and 1880, with each iteration boasting a portrait of President Andrew Jackson. In 1928, the note was redesigned with the image of President Abraham Lincoln and issued for the first time in its smaller format.

All 1963 $5 Legal Tender Notes available here represent the sixth and final design. These notes are in plastic currency sleeves and come in GEM Uncirculated condition. This indicates the notes have above-average centering for the obverse and reverse designs, with only one or two minor detractions present.

On the obverse of 1963 $5 Legal Tender Notes, you will find the image of President Abraham Lincoln. This portrait of Lincoln debuted on the $5 Legal Tender Note in 1928 when the smaller format was introduced and remains on the modern $5 Federal Reserve Note to this day.

The reverse side of the 1963 $5 Legal Tender Note features the Lincoln Memorial. First used in 1928 as well, the Lincoln Memorial had just recently been completed in 1922. United States Notes are distinguishable from Federal Reserve Notes of the era with the use of red ink for the serial numbers and Treasury seals.

Though the United States Note is no longer in production and many notes have been removed from circulation, the Treasury estimates that some $239 million in United States Notes remains in circulation, though this amount is excluded from the public debt of the United States.

We also never have access to your credit/debit card details, as they are securely communicated directly to the payment processor (Authorize.net) and never retained by Silver.com. For this reason, we also don't process credit/debit card orders over the phone, as it is the least secure way to process those transactions.

In addition, all VISA and MasterCard orders undergo an additional step of user authentication - the respective Verified by VISA or MasterCard SecureCode programs. Upon completing checkout with a VISA or MasterCard credit/debit card, you may be promoted for additional details to confirm your identity and protect our customers against credit card fraud.

Do you charge sales tax?

We are required to collect sales tax in certain states. You can review your states sales tax policy here: https://www.silver.com/taxes. You should always consult with a tax adviser for specific advice in your area.

Where does your spot price come from?

We use a live, up-to-the-second spot price feed supplied by Xignite.com, a worldwide leader in the data supply market.

Are your products actually in stock?

Yes. We are one of the few bullion dealers in the industry who only deems products "in stock" when we have them on-hand and ready to ship immediately. In the instance of a presale item, we denote that the product is on presale and the estimated shipping date. While we make the best efforts to hit presale dates, the dates are only estimates, given we cannot control mint production issues and/or carrier dealyes.

Why are multiple prices listed?

We offer a 4% discount to "cash" paying customers - with paper check, bank wire, and bitcoin payments being defined as cash. On many products, we are also able to offer volume discounts to customers purchasing large quantities of the same item. All volume pricing is laid out in the chart on the product's description page, as well as in the cart.

When do I lock in my price?

All prices are locked in at the time of purchase. Credit/debit card, PayPal, BitCoin, Ethereum, and Ripple orders are paid at the time of checkout, while paper check and bank wire orders require a credit/debit card on file to lock in your pricing while we await your payment. Please note, paper check and bank wire orders will NOT result in a charge to your card - we simple maintain the card on file while we await full payment by your selected payment method.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently only ship to addresses in the United States, including APOs.
