A One Dollar coin was added to the US Mint Proof Set in 1973, making it the first time since 1904 that a One Dollar coin was part of the set. It was the copper-nickel-clad version of the Eisenhower Dollar. This also made it a 6 coin set. While sales of the sets did fall off a bit from the 1972 levels, the US Mint still managed to sell 2,760,339 sets in 1973. This set was made by the US Mint in San Francisco. The Proof finish on these coins enhances their beauty. Right now, the 1973 US Mint Proof Set is available for purchase from Silver.com.

The obverse and the reverse of the Eisenhower Dollar were both designed by Frank Gasparro, the US Mint’s Chief Engraver.

In designing the obverse of the Eisenhower Dollar, Gasparro studied 30 pictures of the former President. In addition, he used a drawing he had actually done of the President in a parade. The influence of these pictures and drawings culminated in the left-facing bust of Dwight D. Eisenhower that appears on the coin.

In determining the reverse of the Eisenhower Dollar, Congress decided a tribute to the Apollo 11 space flight was appropriate since the space program had begun under Eisenhower’s administration. The design is based upon the Apollo 11 mission insignia, and features a bald eagle landing on the moon’s surface, carrying an olive branch. A depiction of the Earth is in the distant background.

Each Proof Set includes one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, Kennedy Half Dollar, and Eisenhower Dollar. This is the first year that a Dollar coin was included.

The coins are packaged in a two-piece clear plastic case. A red felt-covered paper insert was included that makes the beauty of the coins really pop! The clear plastic case is inserted into a black plastic frame that has a hinged flap that can be flipped over to display the coins.
