The US Mint raised the price of their Proof Sets in 1977 from $7.00 to $9.00, even though the sets contained the same number of coins and the same face value. However, even with this price increase, they sold 3,251,152 of the 1977 Proof Sets. This sales volume still topped the pre-Bicentennial annual sales. All 6 coins in the set – except the Lincoln Cent – are Proof-only issue. The mirror-like Proof finish on these coins enhances their beauty and shine. This set was minted by the US Mint in San Francisco. Presently, the 1977 US Mint Proof Set is available for purchase from Silver.com.

The Proof Set includes one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, Kennedy Half Dollar, and Eisenhower Dollar. The quarter, half dollar, and dollar coin reverse designs in the 1977 Proof Sets returned to their traditional designs, after last year’s bicentennial designs.
The Washington Quarter obverse design depicts a left-facing profile of George Washington. John Flanagan created this design after using a 1786 bust of Washington, sculpted by Jean-Antoine Houdon, as his inspiration.
The Washington Quarter reverse design depicts an eagle, with outspread wings, perched on top of a bundle of arrows, framed below by two olive branches. John Flanagan also created this design.
The 1977 Proof Set comes in the standard Proof Set packaging that has been used since 1973. Each coin is arranged in a separate sealed ring and positioned on a red felt-covered paper insert. The insert is sealed in a two-piece clear plastic case. The clear plastic case is then inserted into a black plastic frame, that opens and closes and can be used as a stand to display the coins. The beauty and shine of the coins really stand out against the red background.
