With the Bicentennial in the past, the US Mint Sets resumed being samples of each of the coins used in circulation except in brilliant uncirculated condition and in official government packaging. These coins are struck in 2 different Mints, with each Mint’s coins packaged in their own sealed cellophane packaging. The 1977 Mint Set contains 12 coins and are available for collectors today. Presently, Silver.com has these 1977 US Mint Sets available for purchase online.

Coin Highlights:

  • Set arrives in sealed cellophane packaging!
  • Set includes twelve 1977 coins from the US Mint!
  • Each denomination has its own obverse and reverse design.
  • Its respective face value – in US dollars – is displayed on each coin.
  • Total of 2,006,869 mint sets were issued in 1977.
  • Please note – the outer envelope/sleeve/box may be missing from some sets.
  • Also note – packaging may not be in perfect condition for some sets.

There are 12 uncirculated coins in the 1977 Mint Sets, separated into 2 packages. The package from the Denver Mint is bordered in red and contains 6 coins. The package from the Philadelphia Mint is bordered in blue and also contains 6 coins. Each package includes one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, Kennedy Half Dollar, and Eisenhower Dollar.

With the new year, the Mint Sets returned to containing coins with the original reverse designs. Without the special Bicentennial coins, one might expect sales of the Sets to have fallen off from 1976 numbers, but they actually increased slightly. Sales of 1977 Mint Sets reached 2,006,869 sets, up from 1976 sales of 1,892,513 sets. And this sales increase was accomplished in spite of an increase in the original issue price of the Sets, from $6.00 to $7.00.

The Kennedy Half Dollar obverse depicts the left profile of John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States. After President Kennedy’s assassination, it was decided by the US Mint that President Kennedy was to appear on one of the larger silver coins – either the silver dollar, half dollar, or quarter. The Mint’s Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts was given the assignment to create the new design. It was the President’s widow, Jacqueline Kennedy, who expressed the preference that President Kennedy be depicted on the half dollar rather than either of the other 2 coins.

The Kennedy Half Dollar reverse depicts a detailed version of the Presidential Seal. Frank Gasparo created this design by modifying the Presidential Seal that he had created for the Kennedy medal in the Mint’s Presidential series.
