If you are looking to add to your gold coin collection, look no further than the 1 oz Gold Canadian Maple Leaf. Their appeal lies in their beautiful designs and the purity of their gold. When first introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1979, the Gold Maple Leaf coins were minted in 99.9% fine gold. Four years later, this was increased to 99.99% fine gold. The Royal Canadian Mint, the official sovereign mint of Canada, was founded in Ottawa in 1908. Responsible for producing all of Canada’s circulation coins, and with the huge popularity of the Gold Maple Leaf coins, the RCM opened a second facility in Winnipeg in the 1980s. This was necessary to boost production capacity.
The obverse of the 1982 Gold Canadian Maple Leaf coin features a right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II. All Canadian coinage since 1952, when Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne, has featured Her Majesty. The profile on this 1982 coin depicts Her Majesty at 39 years old. Later updates to her profile would depict Her Majesty at 64 years old and 79 years old.
The reverse of the 1982 Gold Canadian Maple Leaf coin features the Maple Leaf, the unofficial emblem of Canada. The texture and fine veins of the leaf are clearly visible in this highly detailed design created by master engraver Walter Ott. This design, created in 1979, has remained virtually unchanged throughout time.
The Gold Canadian Maple Leaf coins have been issued annually since 1979. Originally minted with a gold purity of 99.9%, they remained that way for 4 years. The RCM increased the coin’s gold purity to 99.99% in November 1982. This increase made the Gold Canadian Maple Leaf the first bullion coin to be minted at such a high gold purity. The consistency of the design and the quality of its gold makes the Gold Canadian Maple Leaf the premier product of the RCM and the standard for all 24-karat gold bullion coins.
The Gold Canadian Maple Leaf coins were originally produced in just the 1 oz denomination. When the RCM increased the gold purity of the coins, they also began to produce them in additional weights. The 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz were the first new weights. The 1/2 oz weight was added in 1986 and the 1/20 oz weight was added in 1993. A 1/15 oz weight was added in 1994 but only for one year. A 1 gram weight was added in 2014. Historically, the most famous and best-selling Gold Canadian Maple Leaf coin is the 1 oz size.
