When the United States Mint launched the Silver American Eagle coin program in 1986, the Secretary of the Treasury James A. Baker III was present for the official coining. The program launched at the San Francisco Mint and Secretary Baker is rumored to have said “I don’t need a pick and shovel to start the San Francisco Silver Rush of 1986.”
The pent-up demand for silver precious metals was met with furious demand for the Silver American Eagle in the first few months it was offered. The 1986 Silver Eagles were first struck on October 29, 1986, and not ready for sale until the end of November. In the very few weeks, the Silver Eagles were offered in 1986, the US Mint recorded a total sales figure of 5,393,005 coins.
