The Silver American Eagle is one of the finest silver bullion coins in the world. First struck in 1986, the coin has since become a must-have for investors and collectors everywhere. The coin bears the imagery of some of America’s most powerful symbols: the Statue of Liberty and bald eagle. The former has stood guard in New York Harbor as a beacon for freedom and justice. The latter has been the national emblem since 1792. Today, you can purchase a 1986 1 oz Silver American Eagle Coin from Silver.com with an MS69 grade from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.

Congress authorized the US Mint to strike Silver American Eagle coins when the Liberty Coin Act was passed in 1985. The first coins left the Mint in 1986, making this 1986 1 oz Silver American Eagle Coin a must-have as it comes from the first year the coins were struck. All of the silver used in these coins comes from sources in the United States. Original coins were struck using silver stores from the Defense National Stockpile. In 2002, Congress authorized the programs extension and permitted the Treasury Department to purchase more silver on the open market when the original stores were depleted.

Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty image is shown on the obverse side of the 1986 1 oz Silver American Eagle Coin. Lady Liberty can be seen walking away from the rising sun. Engravings include “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and the year of minting. Weinman’s Walking Liberty image originated on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar in 1916, and was minted through 1947.

The reverse side of the coin features John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle design. The eagle sits behind a shield, with arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. The 13 stars above its head represent the original 13 colonies in America. Engravings include “United States of America,” the face value, weight, purity, and metal content of the coin.

The US Mint was founded in 1792, making it one of the oldest mints in North America. The Mint operates four primary facilities and is responsible for the production of all coins for the federal government. An MS69 grade from the NGC indicates these coins have an attractive, sharp strike with no more than two blemishes.
