The Proof Silver American Eagle coins were introduced in 1986 by the United States Mint. The collectible silver bullion coin debuted at the same time as its silver bullion, investment-grade counterpart. The bullion version experiences greater demand each year, the Proof Silver Eagles have greater collectible value and a more beautiful finish.
As the United States Mint introduced the first two American Eagle bullion coins, it revived coin designs not seen on American coins in at least 40 years. The Silver Eagle revived the Walking Liberty Half Dollar design that ran from 1916 to 1947, while the Gold Eagle revived the Gold Double Eagle design issued from 1907 to 1933.
On the obverse of the 1987-S Proof Silver American Eagle Coin is the image of Walking Liberty. This iconic design from the US Mint was created by Adolph A. Weinman and features Liberty’s full figure walking in left-profile relief. She moves from left to right with the American flag over her shoulders as she pursues the sun on the horizon.
The reverse side of 1987 Proof Silver American Eagle Coins features the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design was first developed in 1794 and has been modified numerous times. This modern version was created in 1986 by John Mercanti for the Silver Eagles.
These 1987-S Proof Silver American Eagle Coins are available in near-perfect condition. A PF69 coin has full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Those flaws are limited in nature to minuscule contact marks or hairlines. The UCAM designation identifies these coins as ultra-cameo coins with strong, frosted design elements and deeply-mirrored, clear background fields.
