Congress authorized production of the Gold American Eagle coin in 1985 with passage of the Gold Bullion Coin Act. Each year, the US Mint produces these coins in four different weights: 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz. Each coin has a face value corresponding to its weight, with the exception of the ¼ oz coin.
Each of the Proof Gold American Eagles available in this product listing was deemed perfect by the NGC. A coin in perfect condition has its full, original luster and no blemishes, contact marks, detracting flaws, or hairlines. The ultra-cameo designation identifies the finish on these coins as strong and frosted on the design, with the background field highlighted by a deeply-mirrored, clear appearance.
Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic Lady Liberty image is featured on the reverse. He created the design in 1908 at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt, who was seeking his help in revamping American coin design. The reverse features the image of a bald eagle flying over its nest with an olive branch in its talon. The image was created by sculptor Miley Busiek.
