The United States Mint started the American Eagle coin program in 1986. At that time, there were limited options. Today, the mint releases four different metal types each year: gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. Each of the metal types offers a unique design, but the themes are all the same.
The gold versions come in multiple weights, including three fractional weights: 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. There are also three different finish options: bullion, proof, and uncirculated. The uncirculated are also called burnished, and they aren’t available in every year’s release.
On the obverse, you will find Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty design. In the image, she walks away from the Capitol building with the sun at her back. She is carrying a flaming torch and an olive branch. The image was originally created for the Gold Double Eagle Coins released in 1907.
The reverse shows sculptor Miley Busiek’s depiction of an American bald eagle family. A large male is shown returning to his family nest with an olive branch between his talons. His female mate and a hatchling are waiting for him in the nest. This design was specifically created to be used on these coins.
These coins contain 91.67 gold by weight, making them exactly 1/2 Troy ounce of pure 22-karat gold. Copper and silver are added to the gold for additional strength and durability.
We ship these coins in plastic flips for their protection. Leaving them in the flips during storage can also protect the coins while you store or display them.
