The obverse of all 1988 Proof Gold American Eagle Coins features the image of Lady Liberty. This iconic design came from Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907 and was the first in American coining to depict Liberty in a distinctly American pose and design.

On the reverse of 1988 1/10 oz Proof Gold American Eagle coins is the image of a family of bald eagles. The mother closely guards a group of hatchlings in the nest as the father flies back toward the nest with an olive branch in its talons.

All Proof Gold Eagle fractional-weight coins were issued by the Philadelphia Mint with “P” mint marks from 1987 (1/2 oz coin introduction) to 1993. From the 1986 debut of Gold American Eagle coins to 1991, all coins in the series had date marks with Roman numerals.
