The United States Mint started this coin program in 1986 with a more limited product offering than we are used to today. Over time, new weights, finishes, and metal types were added to the American Eagle program.
Now, you can find Gold American Eagle Coins in four weights: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. There are also three different finish options, even though not all of them are available each year. These finishes are proof, bullion, and uncirculated, which can also be called burnished.
There are now four different metal offerings for American Eagle Coins. The gold and silver are the most popular, but there are also platinum and palladium varieties. Each different metal type will have a different design on each face of the coin.
The obverse depicts Lady Liberty as she was depicted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens when he was working on a design for the Gold Double Eagle Coins in 1907. In the image, Lady Liberty walks away from the Capitol building carrying a flaming torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. She is shown with the sun glancing off of her back.
On the reverse, sculptor Miley Busiek’s depiction of an American bald eagle family is proudly displayed. In the image, there is a large male bald eagle with an olive branch returning to the family nest where his mate and hatchling are waiting for him. This image was made just for Gold American Eagle Coins.
These coins each contain 91.67 gold by weight, which gives them exactly 1/2 Troy ounce of pure 22-karat gold. Copper and silver are added to the gold to give the coins extra strength and durability.
We ship these coins in plastic flips for their protection. By leaving the flips on, you are providing protection during storage as well.
