The 1989-P 1/10 oz Gold Proof American Eagle Coin marks the second year that the Philadelphia Mint—indicated by the “P” mint marking shown on the coin—has released this 1/10 oz fractional-weight denomination. This bullion product also features a special proof finish, which means that the designs shown on the coin appear frosted while the backgrounds are mirrored in appearance. Struck with 22 karats of gold, this coin was manufactured using a metal combination of 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver.
Since 1987, releases of Gold Eagles have been considered the official gold bullion coins of the United States. Since its birth, this coin collection has remained a fan-favorite among investors and collectors around the world. The 1/10 oz weight denomination wasn’t introduced until 1988 by the Philadelphia Mint, where this weight was manufactured until after 1993 when production permanently moved to the West Point Mint.
A modified rendition of the original Double Eagle design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens is shown on the obverse of the 1989-P 1/10 oz Gold Proof American Eagle Coin, which was featured on United States twenty-dollar gold pieces between the years 1907 and 1933. In the design, the figure of Lady Liberty is shown with her long hair flowing out behind her. She holds a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The bottom left of the obverse also shows the U.S. Capitol Building in the background.
Sculptor Miley Busiek created the reverse design included on the 1989-P 1/10 oz Gold Proof American Eagle Coin. In this image, a family of eagles is shown, with the male eagle flying overhead and the female eagle and hatchlings waiting below in the nest. The male eagle carries an olive branch in its talons.
