Just three years into the Gold American Eagle program, it was clear that the official gold bullion coin of the United States was going to be a popular product with collectors. Following economic sanctions against South Africa in the 1970s, the Krugerrand faced challenges from the Gold Canadian Maple Leaf and Gold American Eagle as mints in North America sought to fill the gap in supply for bullion coins. Now, you can own a 1989-P 1/4 oz Gold American Eagle from with a PR70 grade from the Professional Coin Grading Service.

The Gold American Eagle has many differences compared to its silver counterpart. While other official bullion products use the same image on the obverse and reverse of both gold and silver coins, the Gold American Eagle program does not follow that path. The images on the obverse and reverse differ from the Silver American Eagle. Additionally, the Gold American Eagle is available in four denominations, compared to just one for its silver counterpart.

The 1989-P 1/4 oz Gold American Eagles available here today have a PR70 grade from the PCGS, indicating each coin is perfectly struck. The deep cameo, or DCAM, designation is reserved for coins with deeply mirrored, clear backgrounds and strong, frosted finishes on the design. The “P” mint mark identifies the coins as a product of the Philadelphia Mint.

On the reverse side is the image of a family of nesting eagles, giving the coin its official name. In sculptor Miley Busiek’s depiction, a male eagle returns to the female and hatchlings in the nest with an olive branch in its talons. The obverse bears the image of Lady Liberty, as designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for use on the $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coin in 1907.

The United States Mint was formed in 1792 following passage of the Coinage Act by Congress. The Mint operates four state-of-the-art facilities across the country, and is the only entity permitted to produce circulation currency for the federal government.
