Coins with this grade have full, original mint luster and lack all possible detracting flaws on the surface areas. The included UCAM label stands for ultra-cameo and indicates the coin has a deeply-mirrored, clear background field with a strong, frosted design element.
On the obverse side of all 1989 Proof Gold American Eagles is a depiction of Lady Liberty. This design was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens who was commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905 to help redesign American coinage for the 20th century. It originally appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin.
The reverse of the 1989 1 oz Proof Gold American Eagle Coin includes the design of a family of nesting bald eagles. Created in 1986 by Miley Busiek, this image features a group of hatchlings along with a male and female eagle, and it is exclusive to the Gold American Eagle collection.
All 1989 1 oz Proof Gold American Eagle coins have a “W” mint mark from the West Point Mint on the obverse. Additionally, these coins are come from the first six years of production and as a result feature date marks in Roman numerals instead of Arabic numerals.
