Gold American Eagles vary in mintage numbers each year. In 1990, the mint released its second-lowest mintage ever for the 1/2 oz versions with only 31,000 coins on the market in the bullion version. The only year with lower mintage numbers was 1991, when only 24,100 bullion versions of the 1/2 oz coins were released.

The United States Mint started this coin program in 1986 with a more limited product offering than we are used to today. Over time, new weights, finishes, and metal types were added to the American Eagle lineup. Today, you can get numerous weights and finishes for the gold versions, and the mint even offers American Eagles in three additional metal types: silver, platinum, and palladium. With each different metal type, you will notice different designs on both faces of the coins.

The obverse depicts Lady Liberty as she was imagined by Augustus Saint-Gaudens when he was creating a design for the Gold Double Eagle Coins in 1907. In the image, Lady Liberty is walking away from the Capitol building with a flaming torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. She is shown with the sun gleaming off of her back.

The reverse shows sculptor Miley Busiek’s depiction of an American bald eagle family. The image shows a large male returning to his family nest with an olive branch between his talons. You will notice that the female and a hatchling are waiting for him in the nest. This design was specifically created to be used on these coins.

These coins contain 91.67 gold by weight, making them exactly 1/2 Troy ounce of pure 22-karat gold. Copper and silver are added to the gold for additional strength and durability.

We ship these coins in plastic flips for their protection. Our clear plastic flips ensure the safety of the coins during shipping and storage. Plus, the clear nature allows the coins to be clearly seen when on display.
