When the United States Mint launched the Gold Eagles program in 1986, they only offered a few selections. In subsequent years, new finishes and sizes were added to the lineup. Today, the mint offers the gold coins in four weights and up to three different finishes, including bullion, proof, and uncirculated. There are also four different metals used to create American Eagle Coins: gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. With each metal type, there are different designs that all follow the same themes.
On the obverse, you will find the Gold Double Eagle design, which was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for use on coins of the same name. In the design, Lady Liberty is depicted walking forward with the sun shining upon her back. She carries a flaming torch in one hand. In the other hand, she is holding an olive branch to symbolize peace.
The reverse image is that of a family of bald eagles. In the design by sculptor Miley Busiek, a large male bald eagle is seen returning to his family nest, where his mate and hatchling await him. The male is clutching an olive branch between his sharp talons. This design was created just for the American Gold Eagle Coins.
Each coin contains 91.67 gold by weight, making exactly 1/2 Troy ounce of pure 22-karat gold in every coin. Copper and silver are both added to the gold to give these coins additional strength and durability.
We ship these coins in plastic flips for their protection. Clear plastic flips ensure the safety of the coins during shipping and storage, but they can still be clearly seen when on display.
