When the United States Mint initially launched the Gold Eagle Coin program back in 1986. At that time, the gold version was only offered in 1 oz and 1/2 oz weights. However, the mint also added other fractional weight options to the lineup in subsequent years.

The mint also offers three different finishes for its Gold American Eagle Coins: bullion, uncirculated, and proof. There are also four different metal options for this coin series, including gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. Each of these metal types will feature different designs on the obverse and reverse.

On the obverse, Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ design of Lady Liberty is proudly featured. In the image, Lady Liberty is walking away from the Capitol building as the sun hits her back. In one hand, she is carrying an olive branch. She clutches a flaming torch in the other hand. This image was originally created for use on Gold Double Eagle Coins back in 1907.

The reverse face of these coins bears the image of sculptor Miley Busiek’s bald eagle family design, which was created just for use on these coins before their release in 1986. The design shows a large male bald eagle returning to his family nest with an olive branch in his talons. Waiting for him in the nest are his female companion and hatchling.
