The United States Mint launched the American Eagle Coin program with just a few select options back in 1986. At the initial launch, the mint released only 1 oz and 1/2 oz gold options. However, today, there are other fractional options, which were added in subsequent years.

This coin program also offers different finishes for the gold options, including proof, bullion, and uncirculated versions of American Eagle Coins. In addition, the mint has also added other metal types to the coin program. Today, you can buy American Eagle Coins in gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. The designs vary based on the metal type, but the themes remain the same.

The obverse face bears the image of Lady Liberty as imagined by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The image was originally created for use on Gold Double Eagle Coins back in 1907, and the design was repurposed for Gold Eagles when this program launched. In the image, Lady Liberty is walking away from the Capitol building with the sun shining at her back. In her left hand, she holds an olive branch as a symbol of peace. Her right hand holds a flaming torch.

On the reverse, you will see a bald eagle family as the male returns to the nest with an olive branch. In the nest, his partner and hatchling await his return. The design was created by sculptor Miley Busiek just for these coins in 1986.

These coins will arrive safely at your door in clear plastic flips for their protection. The flips are useful for both the shipping and storage processes to keep dust and dirt off the surfaces of the coins. Containing 91.67% gold by weight, these coins will contain exactly 1/2 Troy ounce of pure 22-karat gold. The coins also contain copper and silver to make them stronger and more durable.
