In celebration of 10 years of minting the Gold American Eagle, the United States Mint released the 1996-W 1/4 oz Gold American Eagle proof with the coin’s iconic images featured in a beautiful, deep cameo relief. These 1996 1/4 oz Gold American Eagles are available from Silver.com with “W” mint mark and PR70 grade from the Professional Coin Grading Service.
The “W” mint mark on these coins identifies them as products of the West Point Mint in New York. These 1996 1/4 oz Gold American Eagles have a PR70 grade from the PCGS, indicating they are perfectly struck proof coins. In order to create the deep cameo appearance, known as DCAM, the US Mint uses a multiple-strike process. The result gives the coins a deeply mirrored, clear background with a design that is strong and frosted.
On the obverse of each coin is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic Lady Liberty, striding forward over Washington DC with her torch held aloft. The “W” mint mark is featured on this side, just below the “1996” engraving. The reverse displays Miley Busiek’s family of eagles, with a male returning to the female and hatchling in the nest. The iconic American phrases “E Pluribus Unum” and “In God We Trust” are engraved on this side.
The United States Mint has been striking official coinage for the federal government since 1792. Its 223-year history makes it one of the oldest in North America. Today, the US Mint is responsible for striking the Gold American Eagle.
