All four versions of the Proof Gold Eagle coin dropped in 1996 following the 10th-anniversary issue of the coins in 1995. While that drop is typical, what wasn’t expected as the cooling demand for the Proof Gold Eagles that would increase in 1997 and continue through 1998. The 1/2 oz Proof Gold Eagle had a mintage of 45,388 in 1995.
Just one year later in 1996, the 1/2 oz coin had lost 10,000 in its mintage to fall to 35,000. It would suffer another major decline in 1997 by dropping to 26,344. The following release wouldn’t be quite as bad, but this period of mintage figures in the late 1990s is among the lowest in the Proof Gold American Eagle collection.
The obverse of 1997 1/2 oz Proof Gold American Eagle Coins includes an image of Lady Liberty from the early 20th century. At a time when most American coins had Greek and Roman-themed designs of Liberty, Augustus Saint-Gaudens revolutionized American coinage with this inspiring vision of Liberty.
On the reverse of the 1997 Proof Gold American Eagle is a design of American bald eagles. Used exclusively on the Gold American Eagle coins from the United States Mint, this design from Miley Busiek depicts a male eagle flying over the nest while a female protects the hatchling within the nest.
These 1997 1/2 oz Proof Gold Eagles earned a perfect certification from the NGC. Coins with a PF70 grade showcase full, original mint luster with no detracting flaws. The UCAM designation of the coins indicates strong, frosted designs and deeply-mirrored, clear backgrounds are present.
