Gold American Eagle coins were introduced in 1986 following passage of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. The coin series originated with a proof and bullion version in 1986. The bullion coin was available in 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz from the first year of production.

These proof coins were originally available only in a 1 oz weight. The ½ oz was introduced a year later in 1987, with the ¼ oz and 1/10 oz coins introduced in 1988. All fractional-weight proofs were originally produced at the Philadelphia Mint, but have been struck at the West Point Mint since 1994.

On the obverse face of all Gold Eagles is the image of Lady Liberty crafted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. His depiction features a full-length figure of Lady Liberty with her robes and hair flowing in the breeze as she strides forward toward you from the national capital of Washington D.C.

The reverse of all 1997-W ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagle coins bears the image of a family of nesting bald eagles. Created by Miley Busiek in 1986, the image features a male bald eagle flying over the nest where a female bald eagle stands guard over the nest and its hatchlings.

Each 1997-W ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagle coins in this product listing is in PR70 condition. The PCGS considers these coins perfect, with their full, original mint luster visible and no detracting flaws. Deep-cameo refers to coins with a finish that features a design set floating above the background field.
