Gold American Eagles are the most diverse offering in the American Eagle coin series. While the Silver Eagle features three versions with just one weight, and the Platinum Eagle features one weight and two versions, the Gold American Eagle is available in three versions and four weights.
The Gold American Eagle consists of a bullion, proof, and burnished coin in 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz weights. The bullion coin was introduced in full first, and designed for bullion investors. Proof coins are ideal for collectors, while the burnished coin is meant for coin exhibitors and serious numismatists.
On the obverse of the 1998-W ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagle is the image of Lady Liberty. First created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt personally tasked Saint-Gaudens with revitalizing American gold coin design. This image featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933.
The reverse of all Gold American Eagle coins features a family of nesting bald eagles. It was created by sculptor Miley Busiek, a talented artist who was commissioned by the US Mint in 1986 to develop the design. Her image appears exclusively on Gold Eagle coins.
Each of these Gold American Eagles is in perfect PR70 condition according to the PCGS. PR70 coins have their full, original mint luster and no blemishes. Deep-cameo defines a coin with a frosted finish that appears to float above a clear background field.
