Animals from the Zodiac, or Chinese Lunar Calendar, have become increasingly popular in coin design in the 20th century. Mints around the world have featured these animals, but the popularity of these designs can be traced back to the Perth Mint’s Lunar Series I.
The Lunar Series I coin program was launched in 1996 with introduction of the Year of the Mouse coin. A new coin was introduced each year through 2007 until all 12 animals from the Zodiac were featured. This 1999 1 oz. Rabbit coin was the fourth in the series and celebrated the Year of the Rabbit on the Zodiac.
On the reverse side of the coins in this listing is the image of a singular rabbit. Sitting amidst a small patch of grassland, the rabbit is shown sitting in an alert position with its eyes fixed on a distant object. Engravings include the year of minting, weight, purity, and metal content of the coin, as well as the symbol for rabbit in Mandarin Chinese.
The obverse side bears the standard image of Queen Elizabeth II as used on all Australian coins. Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait depicts Her Majesty in right-profile relief, with engraving surrounding her reading “Elizabeth II,” “Australia,” and “100 Dollars.”
Perth Mint is not the official mint of Australia, as that responsibility lies with the Royal Australian Mint. However, the Perth Mint is the oldest operating facility in the country and its products are recognized as legal tender under a coinage law passed in the 1970s.
