When the United States government collected and melted all gold coins in circulation during the 1930s, it created instant rarity for those few coins that survived. History buffs and investors alike clamor for these coins when they are available for purchase. These coins were produced during a 67-year period starting in 1840. The final coins were struck in 1907.

On the obverse side of the coin is the image of Lady Liberty, designed by Gobrecht and inspired by Benjamin West’s painting. Lady Liberty is depicted in left-profile relief wearing a crown with the word “Liberty” engraved on it. Engravings on this side include 13 stars representing the original American Colonies, and the year of minting.

The reverse side of the coin features the image of a heraldic eagle. With its wings spread wide, the bald eagle has a shield on its chest. It clutches arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. Engravings on this side include “United States of America” and the face value of the coin as “2 ½ Dollars.”

Each of the coins in this series is available in brilliant uncirculated condition. BU coins show no trace of wear on the surface, but can show contact marks, spotted surfaces, or breaks in the luster.

The United States Mint struck these coins at numerous facilities over the course of time. San Francisco, New Orleans, Dahlonega, Charlotte, and Philadelphia all played a role in production of these coins.
