Many of the world’s leading bullion brands have been in operation for decades. Some have existed in some form for a century or more, though the consistency of bullion bar production throughout the timespan has varied. One of the handful of bullion brands no longer active, though still with items available to investors, is Engelhard. Opened as a platinum smelting and refining business, Engelhard also actively produced silver and gold bars for sale. Engelhard was formerly a Fortune 500 company based in the United States. The company was headquartered in Iselin, New Jersey, and originally founded in Newark, New Jersey, by Charles W. Engelhard Sr. The company’s lasting credit to this day is the creation of the catalytic converter used in internal combustion engines to remove harmful chemicals from the vehicle’s exhaust.
A series of acquisitions and mergers by Engelhard Sr. in the early years of the business positioned it to be a leader in the future bullion market. After acquiring a number of related businesses in 1903, Engelhard Sr. founded the American Platinum Works. The next year, he purchased Baker & Co., a platinum smelting and refining operation that was folded into his new platinum works. By the early 20th century, Engelhard was known as one of the primary brands of gold, silver, and platinum bullion bars.
The obverse side of these 2 oz Gold Engelhard Bars features a depiction of the company logo. The logo takes up much of the design element as it’s arranged horizontally from left to right across the width of the bar. It consists of a simple rectangle with the word “Engelhard” inscribed at the center.
On the reverse face of 2 oz Gold Engelhard Bars is a blank field. Often as a result of inaccessibility, though also a result of a desire to offer a lower price, design elements are only struck on one side of cast bars. Cast gold bars often come with a lower premium compared to minted ingots because less time and effort goes into production, some of which is the result of only taking the time to strike designs on one face.
These 2 oz Gold Engelhard Bars are available to purchase with protective wrapping materials around each individual bar. Your bars will ship in a standard cardboard box. These cast gold bars are known as cast loafs because of the slight resemblance of the bars to a loaf of bread. You will notice the obverse face tapers down to the sides and to the flat reverse of the bar.
