Each year, Eastern State Penitentiary plays host to a fundraising event known as “Terror Behind the Walls.” The annual Haunted House Halloween celebration is run by the Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site to help raise funds to support restoration and preservation efforts at the site. Among the themes of the celebration is the raising of Frank and Carson, matching 300-lb gargoyle statues that complete the look of the neo-Gothic structure.
All of the 2 oz Silver Gargoyle Rounds in the Type III release are available to purchase individually with a plastic flip or in multiples of 10 with tubes. All rounds are offered in brand-new condition from the Intaglio Mint.
On the obverse side of 2 oz Silver Gargoyle Rounds, you will find the menacing image of Frank or Carson. Though the two gargoyles have different names, they are exactly alike in appearance. Here, the gargoyle sits perched 40-feet high above the outer walls of the penitentiary. In a nod to the history of the site, the gargoyle wears ankle cuffs with chains dangling down. His gruesome face stares directly down at those entering the site.
Eastern State Penitentiary was once the largest and most expensive public structure in the United States. Completed in 1829, it served as an active prison for more than 140 years before closing in 1971. Among its famous guests, the gangster Al Capone.
The reverse face of the 2 oz Silver Gargoyle Round includes the common theme of the series. Each round in the collection, regardless of obverse type release, has this Gothic stained-glass window frame look with the name of the series inscribed through the center. There is also a small gargoyle depicted on its perch on the letter “O” in gargoyles.
