Each of the 2 oz Silver Saint-Gaudens Rounds in this product listing come to you from the Intaglio Mint in Texas and are in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The rounds are housed in protective packaging and celebrate one of America’s best coin designers of all time.
Saint-Gaudens was commissioned directly by President Theodore Roosevelt to design new artwork for American circulation coins. President Roosevelt commissioned Saint-Gaudens in 1905 and he completed work on the Lady Liberty design for the $20 Gold Double Eagle in 1907. Unfortunately, Saint-Gaudens would die from illness months before the United States Mint struck and issued the coins for circulation.
His original design of Liberty featured a circular surround of 46 stars, reflecting the number of states in the Union at that time. It was also originally designed without the phrase “In God We Trust” on the reverse side. By 1912, the design included 48 stars to reflect New Mexico and Arizona joining the Union and also featured the national motto after outrage from Americans at its exclusion initially.
On the obverse of 2 oz Silver Saint-Gaudens Rounds is a vision of Lady Liberty. When introduced in 1907, this design was the first to feature Lady Liberty in a front-facing relief. Her full figure is depicted walking forward into the unknown future with her torch as a guiding light for the nation and the olive branch in her hand indicative of the hopes for peace in the future.
The reverse side of 2 oz Silver Saint-Gaudens Rounds also features his reverse design from the $20 Gold Double Eagle. In this design, an American bald eagle is depicted as it glides over the rising sun with its rays stretching out to the horizon.
