The Greek phrase molon labe specifically translates as “having come, take.” However, it is more commonly translated into English and “come and take them.” The phrase was spoken by King Leonidas to the Persian emperor Xerxes I. As a force of nearly 150,000 Persians marched toward Thermopylae, Leonidas led the Greek response with 300 elite Spartan warriors and roughly 6,500 other Greek soldiers. His Spartans would serve as the tip of the spear, blocking the Hot Gates and challenging the Persians to “come and take” their weapons by force.
On the obverse of the 2 oz Silver Molon Labe Round, a muscular Spartan leader who could be Leonidas himself emerges from the line of Spartan warriors behind their phalanx formation. In defiance of the overwhelming numbers, the Spartan leader emerges to faceoff with whoever is brave enough to counter his power and skills.
The reverse side of 2 oz Molon Labe Rounds includes the Intaglio Mint seal. This design is featured on many Intaglio Mint collections and features a Roman column in the shape of an “I” in the center. This is surrounded by a background field of radial sunburst lines. As your eye transitions to the outer design edge, you’ll notice a stippled background field with inscriptions of the round’s weight, purity, and metal content.
