Napoleon III had a storied reign as the ruler of France. He is one of history’s only men to rule over both a democratic republic with elections and an empire with a sole ruler. Elected in 1848, he was the first-ever President of France and led the country in that capacity through 1852. In 1851, he came up against a constitutional mandate blocking him from reelection.

In 1851, he led a coup to maintain his power in France. In so doing, he brought an end to the Second French Republic and began his reign as Emperor of France during the Second French Empire.

In the obverse design of 20 Francs Gold France Coins, a right-profile effigy of Napoleon III features on the coin. There are two possible designs on this coin, with both being created by Desire-Albert Barre. The design used from 1853 to 1860 features a young Napoleon III without a laurel crown, while the one used from 1861 to 1870 captures an older Napoleon III with a laurel wreath.

For the reverse face of the 20 Francs Gold Coins, the field features one of two designs. The coins issued from 1853 to 1860 bear the image of a simple wreath with the denomination at the center. Coins released from 1861 to 1870 have a depiction of the Imperial Coat of Arms of the French Empire.

These 20 Francs Gold France Coins come in Almost Uncirculated condition with individual plastic flips for delivery. AU coins have medium to near-full luster with only extremely light or trace wear on the highest relief points of the piece.
