One of the most popular coin denominations in the history of modern Europe was the 20 Francs piece. First introduced by Napoleon in France in 1803, this coin held a status some refer to as the “Euro before the Euro.” Adopted by countless nations across the continent, one of the more beautiful designs was the 20 Francs Swiss Helvetia design issued by the Bern Mint. Today, 20 Francs Gold Coins with the Helvetia design are available to you online at Silver.com.

The 20 Francs Gold Coins of the Helvetia design range includes two different issues in the late 1800s. The so-called Helvetica range of coins was available from 1883 to 1896 and featured different designs than the Helvetia coins. The Helvetica had a crowned portrait of Helvetia on the obverse with no background imagery. The reverse of the Swiss shield also had a simpler background design that included a wreath encircling the coat of arms.
When the Bern Mint introduced the Helvetia design, the popular 20 Francs Gold Coin received a more ornate design element on both sides. These coins of the Helvetia range were issued from 1897 to 1935, with a restrike released in 1947 and 1949.
All of the 20 Francs Gold Coins in this issue have the latter Swiss Helvetia design for the obverse and reverse faces. Each one is individually sealed in plastic and remains in BU condition.
The obverse of the 20 Francs Gold Coin includes the left-profile bust of Helvetia. She is traditionally depicted standing with a flowing gown, braided hair, and a wreath that symbolizes confederation in Switzerland. This bust was created in 1895 by Fritz Ulysse Landry and depicts her head only with flowing hair that includes a braid and a wreath around her neck and chest. In the background field, you’ll notice the mountains of the Swiss Alps.
On the reverse of these 20 Francs Gold Coins is the ornate Swiss shield design. The nation’s coat of arms, the Swiss shield itself is a simple design that includes only the cross of Switzerland. In the background, there is a cluster of oak leaves with the engraving of “20 FR” for the face value and a year of issue also inscribed.
