When gold was discovered in California in 1848, the United States was suddenly flush with the world’s most sought after precious metal. Gold coins were not minted in large numbers prior to the 1830s, largely due to a lack of availability. The California Gold Rush changed the nation’s attitude toward gold coins, and the $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle, available now from, was the result of an influx of gold.

Coin Highlights:

  • Ships in a protective plastic slab.
  • Extremely limited availability!
  • Consists of .9675 ounces of .900 fine gold.
  • Issued a face value of $20 (USD) by the federal government.
  • Available in Mint State 65 condition.
  • Designed by James B. Longacre.

Following the gold rush in California, Congress authorized the mintage of a $20 Double Gold Eagle coin. A number of different patterns were designed for the coin following passage of an act in 1849, but the first coins didn’t appear in circulation until 1850. These coins were struck between 1850 and 1907 in three different series.

The first coins in the series lacked an engraving of the motto “In God We Trust,” and were struck until 1866. Type II coins in the series had the face value engraved on the reverse as “Twenty D,” and were produced from 1866 to 1876. The Type III coins featured a new face value engraving of “Twenty Dollars,” and were produced from 1878 until the coin was halted in 1907.

On the obverse side of the coin is the classic Greek depiction of Lady Liberty. She is featured with a crown atop her head and her hair pinned back, with 13 stars around her head representing the American Colonies. The reverse bears the image of a stunning, heraldic eagle. The sun’s rays can be seen behind the bird, with a banner running from wing to wing that reads “E Pluribus Unum.”

Each of the coins in this listing is available in Mint State 65 condition. Coins with this grade have an attractive luster, light but scattered contact marks, and no more than two larger detracting marks.
