Gold American Eagle coins are currently available from the United States Mint in three different versions. The bullion version was introduced first in 1986, with all four weights (1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz) available at that time. Burnished coins with a special finish ideal for those who exhibit and display coins were made available in 2006.

The Proof Gold American Eagle is the most popular coin in the wider Gold Eagle series. The coins were phased in over three years, with the 1 oz coin available immediately in 1986. The ½ oz coin was added in 1987, while the ¼ oz and 1/10 oz coins were introduced in 1988.

On the obverse face of the Gold American Eagle is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ depiction of Lady Liberty. He was hand-picked by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905 to redesign American gold coins. Though his design is considered the greatest in American coinage history, he never lived to see it on the face of American currency. He died in 1907, just months before the image was released on the $20 Gold Double Eagle.

The reverse includes the depiction of a family of nesting bald eagles, and was created exclusively for the Gold American Eagle in 1986 by sculptor and artist Miley Busiek.

Each 2000-W ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagle in this listing has a PR70 grade. This means each has its full, original mint luster and no blemishes. Deep-cameo describes proof coins on which the design set appears to float above the background field.
