The 1/10 oz Proof Gold American Eagle coin was among the two final options to debut in the collection. Along with the 1/4 oz coin, the 1/10 oz coin was first released in the Proof Gold Eagle range in 1988 with a mintage of 143,881. That far surpassed the mintage of the 1 oz coin that year, and placed the 1/10 oz coin at the top of collectors’ minds each year.

From that point until 2001, the 1/10 oz Proof Gold American Eagle had the highest mintage figure each year among the four coins. The 1/4 oz was, in most years, the next-best choice for many collectors. The 1/10 oz coin would remain the first choice until the Great Recession, after which the 1 oz coin would move to the prime position with collectors.

The obverse of 2001 1/10 oz Proof Gold American Eagles features the Lady Liberty design from Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This image was created in 1907 by Saint-Gaudens for the $20 Gold Double Eagle and was requested by President Theodore Roosevelt as he sought to revamp all American currency designs.

On the reverse of 2001 Proof Gold Eagles is the image of the American bald eagle. The national symbol, the bald eagles featured here include a male eagle in flight with a female eagle guarding a hatchling in the nest.

All of these 2001 1/10 oz Proof Gold American Eagles have PF70 certifications. This grade from the NGC indicates the coins have full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws. The included UCAM labels mark the presence of strong, frosted designs and deeply-mirrored, clear backgrounds.
