Each of the 2001-W ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagle coins in this product listing earned a perfect grade from the PCGS. PR70 coins have their full, original mint luster, and feature no contact marks, blemishes, spotted surfaces, or other imperfections.
The term Deep-cameo is used by the PCGS to classify proof coins with a special appearance. Each coin has a strong, frosted finish on the design set, with a deeply-mirrored, clear background field. The resulting contrast makes the design set appear to float above the background.
On the obverse face of all 2001-W ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagle coins is the image of Lady Liberty. First designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907, it depicts Liberty as she strides confidently toward an unknown future from the national capital of Washington DC. His image was designed in 1907 for use on the $20 Gold Double Eagle, remaining in circulation until 1933.
Sculptor Miley Busiek was commissioned to complete the design used on the reverse of the Gold American Eagle. She created the vision of a family of nesting bald eagles, with a male flying above the nest as a female steadfastly guards the hatchlings. Her design is exclusive to the Gold American Eagle.
The United States Mint originally struck its fractional-weight Gold American Eagle coins at the Philadelphia Mint in Pennsylvania. Beginning in 1994 though, all fractional-weight production was shifted to the West Point Mint in New York.
