Every year, the United States Mint strikes a wide variety of American Eagle Coins in various weights and finishes. Right now, the US Mint makes 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold weights, as well as proof, uncirculated, and bullion versions. There are also four different metal type options: gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. Each metal type features its own unique designs.
The United States Mint has made 1/2 oz versions of Gold American Eagles since the inception of the series in 1986. The mint has released other versions of coins during various different years since 1986.
Lady Liberty can be seen striding off the face of the coin on the obverse. In the design, the sun is hitting her back, and she is carrying a flaming torch and an olive branch. The design was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for use on the Gold Double Eagle Coins that were released the same year.
On the reverse, you will find sculptor Miley Busiek’s design of an American bald eagle family. In the image, a large male returns to the nest with an olive branch between its talons. Awaiting him in his nest is his female mate and hatchling. The design was specifically created for use on these coins back in 1986.
Each of these Gold Eagles will ship to your door in protective plastic flips from our secure facility. The flips will help protect the coins from damage. The coins contain exactly 1/2 Troy ounce of pure 22-karat gold, making them 91.67% gold by weight. The remaining composition is copper and silver, which helps make the coins more durable.
