Mintage figures for the 1 oz Gold American Eagle coin rebounded in 2002, jumping nearly 100,000 coins in total but, for the fourth year in a row, failing to overcome the demand for the 1/10 oz version of the bullion coin. More importantly for precious metal investors though, gold prices were showing signs of new life.
Spot gold prices in 2002 surged about the $300-per-ounce level with fervor during the year. After opening at $278 per ounce, gold closed the year at $347.20 per ounce. This not only marked the highest price for gold since 1997, it also marked the first of many years of rising prices for gold.
The obverse of the 2002 1 oz Gold American Eagle features the stunning design of Liberty. Created in 1907, this depiction of Liberty comes from Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The Irish-American artist and engraver was chosen by President Theodore Roosevelt to reimagine the first of many new coin designs in the years to come during the early 20th century.
All Gold American Eagle coins feature a reverse design from Miley Busiek. An accomplished artist and sculptor, Busiek created a vision of the American bald eagle family. Her creation includes a nest full of hatchlings guarded by a female eagle, while a male eagle soars overhead the nest.
Each 2002 1 oz Gold American Eagle Coin is available for purchase in BU condition. Coins in this condition show no wear and tear on the surfaces. However, minor flaws such as breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, and contact marks are possible as a result of striking the blanks during production.
