The Gold Eagle 1 oz coin nearly doubled its mintage figure from 2002 to 2003. For the first time in four years, the 1 oz coin returned to the top of the heap, outselling the 1/10 oz coin convincingly as the latter had just 245,029 coins. Much of this expansion in Gold Eagle mintage overall was the result of rising gold prices.
After surpassing $300 per ounce in 2002, gold continued its surge in 2003 by climbing above the $400-per-ounce level. Gold opened the year at $343.80 per ounce and finished the year at $416.25, gaining 20% for the year as a whole.
On the obverse of all 2003 1 oz Gold American Eagle coins is one of America’s most iconic designs. The Lady Liberty design featured on the Gold Eagle depicts Liberty in a free-flowing robe striding forth from the national capital with her torch held aloft as a guiding light for the nation. This was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
The reverse of the Gold American Eagle coin features a design from Miley Busiek. She created a portrait of an American bald eagle family that bears a nest full of hatchlings, a female eagle keeping a watchful eye on the nest, and a male flying overhead. Busiek’s design is exclusive to the Gold Eagle series.
