Silver American Eagle coins are the official silver bullion coin of the United States. The coins are all struck using only silver sourced from within the US. Under the Liberty Coin Act, that silver was originally provided by the Defense National Stockpile. A 2002 extension to the coin program allowed for the purchase of additional silver on the open market, provided it was still sourced from within the US.

It’s hard to label a coin with mintage levels in the millions as rare, but in terms of Silver American Eagles produced in the 21st century, this 2003 coin can be hard to find. Only 8.4 million were struck in 2003, the lowest level of any coin in the series during the 2000s. The MS69 grade from the NGC signifies each coin still has its full, original luster, but does possess a maximum of two, minor detracting marks.

Adolph A. Weinman created the Walking Liberty image, considered one of the best to grace an American coin, in 1916. John Mercanti, a US Mint chief engraver, designed the heraldic eagle specifically for use on the Silver American Eagle.

The United States Mint was founded in 1792 following passage of the Coinage Act by Congress. It produces Silver American Eagle coins at the San Francisco, Philadelphia, and West Point minting facilities. Production of the bullion coins is shared by all three facilities.
