Gold American Eagle coins were first introduced by the United States Mint in 1986 following passage of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 by Congress. The legislative body, which has the sole power to issue monetary value to American coins, stipulated that all Gold American Eagle coins should feature only gold sourced from within the US.
Each of the 2003-W 1 oz Proof Gold American Eagles in this product listing has a PR70 grade from the PCGS. Perfect proof coins feature full, original mint luster and no blemishes of any kind. Deep-cameo identifies the strong, frosted finish of the design set and the deeply-mirrored, clear background field.
On the obverse of all Gold American Eagles is the image of Lady Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. His depiction of Lady Liberty is credited with reviving American gold coin design, and is considered by many the finest American coin design ever.
The reverse features a unique image of the bald eagle created by Miley Busiek. Her image, featured only on Gold American Eagles, depicts a male bald eagle as it returns to the family nest where a female is guarding a group of hatchlings.
All Gold American Eagles are now produced at the West Point Mint facility. Originally, only these 1 oz. Gold American Eagles were struck at West Point, but all fractional coins were shifted to West Point from Philadelphia in 1994.
