The Silver American Eagle has never maintained an upward trajectory from one year to the next consistently. After six years of growth, 2003 marked a slight retreat in the mintage numbers for the program. On the whole however, the popularity of these coins remained at never-before-seen levels in 2003. As with previous years, the United States Mint set a mintage cap on its proof specimens at 750,000 coins, and would nearly hit that mark in 2003. There were a total of 747,831 2003-W Proof Silver American Eagle coins sold, an improvement of 100,000 coins over the 2002 issue.
For the bullion coins in 2003 however, the story was different. After surpassing 10 million coins for the first time since 1987, sales retreated in 2003 to a level of 8.465 million. Production would remain level over the next two years before experiencing a never-before-seen surge in demand.
Throughout the 2003 calendar year, silver prices maintained an average of $4.88 per ounce, but a spike in value at the end of the year saw prices rise to almost $6.00 per ounce. The increase in proof production in 2003 was the first of four consecutive years of growth for the collector’s version of the coin.
