Silver Canadian Maple Leaf coins from the Royal Canadian Mint grew in demand and variety in 2004. The 1 oz silver bullion coin was issued with 680,925 coins struck for investors, marking a minuscule fall from the year before, but still on a positive track in the early 2000s. There were also various privy mark coins issued in 2004.
In fact, there were three major privy mark issues available from the mint in 2004. Among these was a D-Day privy mark on a small run of Silver Maple Leafs to mark the 60th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normany, France in World War II. An Alphonse Desjardins privy mark honored the life-long Canadian politician, and the seventh privy mark in the initial Zodiac Series at the Royal Canadian Mint (1998-2009) appeared with a Year of the Monkey mark.
On the reverse of these particular 2004 1 oz Silver Canadian Maple Leaf is the iconic emblem of the nation of Canada. The sugar maple leaf is featured in the center with the nation of issue, purity, metal content, and weight is found on the reverse along with Walter Ott’s 1979 design of the maple leaf.
The obverse of the Silver Canadian Maple Leaf coin from this year marks the second use of the Susanna Blunt fourth-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The first portrait of Her Majesty without a crown, the design from the Canadian artist reflects Elizabeth II’s father George VI and his choice to feature in coinage designs without a crown.
All Silver Maple Leaf Coins are from the Royal Canadian Mint. Opened in 1908, the RCM operates its original location in Ottawa and a secondary location in Winnipeg that opened in the 1980s to expand coinage capacity in Canada.
