The coin program began with bullion and proof coins available, but only the bullion coins have been minted every year since the coin’s introduction. All coins in the series use silver sourced from within the United States, as stipulated in the Liberty Coin Act of 1985.
On the obverse side of the Silver American Eagle is Adolph A. Weinman’s depiction of Walking Liberty. Weinman was a student of artist and sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the man responsible for reviving coin design in American minting. The image features Lady Liberty striding toward the setting sun with her right hand outstretched and the American flag draped over her shoulders.
The reverse side displays John Mercanti’s image of the heraldic bald eagle. In the image, the eagle sits behind a shield and is clutching arrows in one talon, with an olive branch in the other.
The United States Mint strikes Silver American Eagle Coins at three of its four mint facilities; the San Francisco Mint, Philadelphia Mint, and West Point Mint.
