The release of the 2006 Burnished Gold American Eagle marked the first year of availability for a second collectible version of the Gold Eagle coins. The burnished coin has matte visuals that result from the polishing process the blank goes through before coining occurs. The US Mint initially offered the Burnished Gold American Eagle coin in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights. This occurred from 2006 to 2008, but after the two-year hiatus the program went through, the fractional-ounce coins were canceled.
The obverse side of the 2006-W 1/2 oz Burnished Gold American Eagle features the historic Lady Liberty design. This image was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and depicts Liberty walking toward the viewer hold her torch aloft in one hand and an olive branch in the other. Her figure has rays of sunshine emanating from behind it and is surrounded by a ring of 50 stars. You will also find the “W” mint mark of the West Point Mint on this surface of the coin.
On the reverse of 2006 Burnished Gold American Eagles is the image of a family of American bald eagles in and around the nest. As a female watches over a young hatchling in the nest, a male eagle flies overhead. This design is exclusive to the Gold Eagles and comes from artist Miley Busiek.
