The United States Mint first issued the Silver American Eagle in 1986. The first-ever release of the Silver Eagle included 1 oz silver coins in Brilliant Uncirculated versions and Proof versions. In 2006, the mint honored the 20th anniversary of the series by introducing a new version of the coin for collectors known as the Burnished Silver Eagle.
In 2006, the mint also issued a one-time coin. As part of the three-coin 20th-anniversary set, the US Mint struck a Reverse Proof Silver Eagle at the Philadelphia Mint. This coin was issued with a P mint mark from the Philadelphia Mint.
Walking Liberty features on the obverse side of 2006-W 1 oz Proof Silver American Eagle Coins. The design on this face of the coins includes a full-length figure of Liberty walking toward the sun on the horizon with her right hand outstretched and her left carrying branches of oak and laurel. The bust of Liberty includes an American flag draped around her figure as she walks toward the sun rising over a mountain.
The heraldic eagle of the United States of America is found in the reverse field of 2006-W Proof Silver American Eagles. Created originally in 1794 by Robert Scot, the 1st Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, this version of the heraldic eagle was modified for the coins in 1986 by John Mercanti. This modern version of the design includes a front-facing bald eagle with the US National Shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. Mr. Mercanti eventually served as the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint during his long career with the mint.
These 2006-W 1 oz Proof Silver American Eagles are in near-perfect condition. PF69 coins showcase full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Acceptable flaws at this grade level include only minuscule contact marks or hairlines located outside of the primary focal points of the coin. The UCAM designation indicates the coins have strong, frosted designs and deeply-mirrored, clear fields.
