The Silver American Eagle reached a milestone in 2006 as the United States Mint celebrated the coin program’s 20th anniversary. In reaction to this, the US Mint released a third version of the coin aimed at collectors and coin exhibitionists. The all-new burnished Silver American Eagle debuted in 2006, and today the 2006-W Burnished Silver American Eagle is available on with a unique certification from the PCGS.

Coin Highlights:

  • 20th anniversary of the Silver American Eagle, and first-ever Burnished Silver American Eagle!
  • Arrives in a protective plastic slab.
  • Consists of one troy ounce of .999 fine silver.
  • Bears a face value of $1 (USD) backed by the federal government.
  • Issued a grade of Specimen Proof 70 by the Professional Coin Grading Service.
  • Features the West Point Mint’s “W” mint mark.

The Burnished Silver American Eagle takes the beauty and attention to detail of the proof version one step further, creating a truly unique product. In order to strike the burnished coins the US Mint goes through painstaking steps to create a beautiful finish on each coin.

First the silver blanks are sandblasted in special machines to give the blank a polished finish. Each blank is then removed from the turning tub by US Mint employees wearing white gloves to avoid oils from human skin transfering onto the blanks. These blanks are loaded into the coining press by hand, struck multiple times, and removed by hand for packaging.

Each 2006-W Burnished Silver American Eagle in this product listing is a perfect specimen with a rare SP70 grade from the PCGS. In addition to exhibiting full, original mint luster and lacking any detracting flaws, these coins have a satiny finish that also exhibits matte appearances and semi-granular look.

On the obverse is the beloved Walking Liberty design from Adolph A. Weinman. Created in 1916, Walking Liberty originally appeared on the nation’s half-dollar coin from 1916 to 1947. The reverse face of the coin features a modern version of the heraldic eagle, created by US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti.
